Upcoming Events

Homeschool Baseball begins April 25th 3pm at the old Navy Base ball field. Contact Janine for directions.

Next Mom's meeting: 4/23 if we go by the 4th Wednesday (Erin can't make it on Tuesdays),
4/30 if we go by the last Wednesday: 6-8 - let me know what date works best.

Clearly defining the SMCHS, it's goals, and intentions is the paramount goal at this meeting unless we want to have a separate meeting for that purpose-let me know.

We also need to discuss the Marine Darling field trip-are we having one?

Ascension Day picnic

End of year Talent Show

Are there any dates and/or upcoming events I'm forgetting? I feel like there are but then again, I am growing another human being which is a brain drain......

Prayers and Holy Week activities

Hi Everyone!  Here is the prayer I have found that we have been praying together in the evenings:

Consecration of the Family to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Most holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
united in perfect love,
as you look upon us with mercy and caring,
we consecrate our hearts,
our lives, our family to you.
We know the beautiful example
of your home in Nazareth was meant to be
a model for each of our families.
We hope to have,
with your help,
the unity and strong,
enduring love you gave to one another.
May our home be filled with joy.
May sincere affection, patience,
tolerance and mutual respect be freely given to all.
May our prayers be filled with the needs of others,
not just ourselves
and may we always be close to your sacraments.
Bless those who are present,
as well as those who are absent,
both the living and the dead;
may peace be among us
and when we are tested,
grant us the Christian acceptance of God's will.
Keep our family close to your Hearts;
may your special protection be with us always.
Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
hear our prayer.

AND___HOLY WEEK IS COMING!!!  I have wanted to do a Christian Seder meal, like we did years ago with our friends the Lombardo's.  With John's schedule I need to just do these things on my own....SOOOOO  I am thinking of a daytime, child friendly Seder on Holy Thurdsday, maybe from 1-3 pm or noon-2.  It would involve prayers and eating--and we would share responsibility for bringing the different foods that symbolize the first passover.  Anyone interested?  ALSO--I have my own pysanki egg kit now, so I can decorate and dye eggs whenever I want to.  This is not a young child friendly activity since
we work with raw eggs and toxic dye and fire--fun!!!  Does anyone want to come over with their older children and join in the egg decorating fun on evening this week or next?

Upcoming Events

Hi everyone,

Given that we (except Erin) forgot, or remembered and then forgot the February meeting (let's face it, it's a hard month), Melissa had the most wonderful idea of putting things up on the BLOG. I admit, I'm a fallen away SMCHSG blog checker. So here we have it:

March 21 Science Fair-space still to be determined but probably in Saint Mary's basement.

March 26 SMCHSG support meeting 7-9 at my house in the barn our at Caroline's if she wants to attend but doesn't want to go anywhere. Stay tuned on that. Things to discuss: Coop for next year, Ascension Thursday picnic, Year End Talent show, field trip to the marine center (Allison, is that one yours?) and whatever else comes up.

April (one of the first 3 Fridays) State Museum. I'm waiting for confirmation. I picked the first Friday in April as the preferred date and if not then one of the two subsequent Fridays.

I think that's it for now unless someone has something else to add?????

There is never any justification in hurrying a child in his or her development.

Just thought I'd share that quote from Sally Fallon Morell.  I love it, and feel it is one of the primary
motivators for why we homeschool families do what we do for our kids.  This is not the mindset of our community schools, for the most part.

Cal was in the Mites league of hockey with his age group, but not enjoying it, and not motivated.  The coach suggested we put him in the group below, which he immediately thought were "babies", and didn't want to do it.  When we suggested he try it and perhaps, being older, he could "help the little kids enjoy the sport." Thankfully, that was an ok suggestion and lo and behold, he now wants to go more and loves it.

Let's share our successes, so we can inspire one another.  Christy shared her experience with working with Zoe in her earlier days, when Zoe was more fearful.  Zoe is now so comfortable without her parents ( with us), and its a delight to see her telling stories and suggesting things to do with "the kids", etc.  Christy's story helped me step back and try a new route to Cal's resistance to long division.  It worked, and now he thinks long division is "too easy."  It might last only a day, but it's progress!  I am grateful for the sharing you moms do.  Thanks.

What does a Bad day look like?

This blog post made me think of all of us....except I know no one else has bad days, right?  No, really.  Sometimes it does feel like a huge battle, and I'm loosing.  So why am I in this battle?  The above post is from a secular standpoint.  I do think we have a bit of an advantage as Catholics.  The why includes forming souls well.

My own bad days include quite a bit of profanity.  I'll be doing a phonics lesson, and someone will start randomly yelling and screaming about a Lego creation that just got smashed on the floor, and something in my brain snaps and I become a turrets monster.  But more often, I try really hard to stay rational, as I hear myself ranting on and on and know the kids are hearing "Wah wah wah Wah wah WAH!"

I do this for my kids.  But I can see that it is for my own benefit.  I am being stretched much more, and asked to grow much more than I would have otherwise--if I were not homeschooling, not Catholic, not parenting, not parenting so many.

And it all starts really coming back at you when your teens start challenging your behavior, or worse, repeating your own bad behavior.  I think this is why younger kids have such a different experience than older kids.  Not until I had teens did I really start making progress in the self-control department....cause they see you, and either call you a hypocrite, or see that you are trying.  But then, teenagers call everyone hypocrite--so we can't take it too seriously....

So what does your worst Day look like?

All Saints' Day celebration

Thank you to Stacy and Digby for hosting our feast day celebration!  It was a wonderful afternoon and we were blessed when the sun came out so that our saints could play outside instead of destroying the Veevers-Carter home.  This is my first attempt at posting pictures on the blog, so I hope it works!
